Orion Jean's excellent deeds are contributing to the improvement of the world.
The Texas boy, 11, was named the 2021 TIME Kid of the Year, according to a press statement from TIME, TIME for Kids, and Nickelodeon.
His "Race to Kindness" program, which he started during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, is said to have been the catalyst for his good actions.
In an interview with Angelina Jolie for TIME, Orion Jean stated, "I observed a lot of things were happening, people were losing their jobs and losing access to food, housing, and all of these important things." And I was immediately aware of the need for assistance. However, the chance only arose when my teacher proposed that I participate in a speech contest.
And if I were to win the contest's cash reward, I'd be able to launch a compassion campaign to aid these folks.
Race To Kindness
According to CBS News, ‘getting that content' was only the starting point for something much bigger. The race to kindness was born in 2021, but it all began as an idea.
The source claims that Jean used his $500 prize money—which he received for winning the competition—to donate toys to the Dallas Children's hospital.
His effort is also said to have gathered 120,000 books for people in need and provided 100,000 meals thanks to the support of family, communities, and partnerships.
"Some children truly don't have access to any literature. They reside in what is known as "book deserts," after all. And while I didn't necessarily want to get rid of them, I did want to shrink those regions or at the very least, distribute books there. According to TIME, Jean added, "I wanted to be able to collaborate with groups in those communities."
My parents, my family, all of the kind corporate sponsors and organizations we collaborated with, as well as folks I've never even met, were all behind me in this, he added. They are all giving because they are moved to assist individuals in their neighborhood.
Kid of the Year
Each of the five Kid of the Year awardees, including Orion Jean, will receive a monetary award to recognize their achievements. Additionally, the winners will assume the job of a Kid Reporter for TIME for Kids, with the benefit of unique access to Nickelodeon events.
