$250k grant helps YMCA in recovering from COVID impacts

Cool Story - $250k grant helps YMCA in recovering from COVID impacts

The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA team met with MPP Ross Romano on Friday to discuss the results of a $250,000 Community Building Fund grant that the organization received from the Ontario government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) over the previous year. A grant was provided last fall to help non-profit groups affected by the pandemic with operating costs.

"I want to congratulate our YMCA on how well they handled the past 2.5 years. Ross Romano, a Sault Ste. Marie MPP, stated "The YMCA's ability to continue operating throughout the COVID-19 outbreak has been made possible in large part by this $250,000 OTF- Community Building Fund. Our government will continue to offer resources like the OTF Community Building Fund to assist the expansion and success of regional businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

During a difficult time, the YMCA was able to operate its buildings with the support of money from the Community Building Fund - Operating grant, which also helped with certain staffing costs. The grant also helped the YMCA in formulating new fundraising and marketing plans to support ongoing operations as well as in the procurement of vital cleaning and sanitizing equipment.

According to Robert Burns, CEO of the Sault Ste. According to Marie YMCA, "of all the YMCAs in Canada, our local YMCA is in the top three overall in membership retention today versus pre-COVID.""

We believe that the additional cleaning and housekeeping personnel, together with the essential cleaning supplies, made it easier for their members and staff to feel secure upon entering our building after lockdowns. They will be able to maintain this high standard because of this funding.

Burns stated, "The additional investment in new, innovative fundraising software has also enabled us to update our donation process, giving us better capabilities going forward regarding campaign planning, donor contact, and overall external communications." "This will enable us to grow and expand our programs to meet the ever-evolving demands of our community."

Visit the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA's website, Facebook page, or Instagram account for additional details about the organization and its programs.
