Little Rock nonprofit aims to standardize climate benefits for farmers

Cool Story - Little Rock nonprofit aims to standardize climate benefits for farmers

Soon, farmers might have a method to get paid from thin air or from what they don't put into thin air.

What's mission: Winrock's goals are to expand economic opportunities, support the environment, and empower the underprivileged. A nonprofit organization that works in more than 40 countries to carry out a portfolio of more than 100 projects in agriculture, the environment, and social development. They combines technical expertise with entrepreneurial innovation to improve lives around the globe.

What's going on: Using $20 million, the Little Rock-based nonprofit Winrock International will oversee the development of a platform for farmers to report their climate-related impacts.

·   It will be examined by Montana's Intertribal Agriculture Council and the Riceland Foods suppliers in Arkansas.

·     The platform is one of 70 climate-smart projects with a combined value of $2.8 billion that the USDA announced last week.

Why it matters: It's estimated that agriculture contributes about 11% of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., or about 24% globally.

   ·   While farmers have been adopting more climate-friendly practices in recent years, they lack a standard mechanism to record and capitalize on their good works, Winrock's Mary Grady told Axios.

How it acts:  The first private voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) register, led by Grady at Winrock, is the American Carbon Registry.

    ·     In order for a farmer who reports growing a cover crop on 50 acres to receive the same credit as a neighboring farmer, the new online register will employ consistent USDA data.

   ·    GHG certifications that can be issued and tracked will result from the accumulation of credits.

  ·      Similar to a carbon offset, a farmer will be able to sell those, or they can bundle certificates with their product when sold, essentially providing the buyer and the buyer's buyer, such as Tyson Foods or Walmart, credit that can be used to accomplish corporate emissions goals.

They are claiming: Their goal is to make it less expensive for farmers to embrace a wide range of climate-smart techniques and to make it simpler to verify climate results.

  ·    The project, according to Grady, "will show how markets can directly provide farmers with value by giving them the driving seat.
