Hospitals are a dreary environment filled with stress for everyone, especially children. Children usually feel nervous and panic in an unfamiliar environment. This is especially true for long-term stays away from their family.
In those times we should help them avoid stress lest it negatively affects their therapy. One of the ways to decrease their anxiety is art therapy. Art is a form of expression loved by young children. The fact is art distracts them from the pain and improves emotional well-being as well. It helps them feel more in control of their situation.
The Crayon initiative gives crayons to kids in hospitals for free. The initiative was created by Brayan Ware who was questioning the crayons that were thrown away. After some research he found that they end up in the refill as a non-biodegradable waste polluting the earth, that’s because crayons are made of waxy material that does not break down even after melting. Moreover, crayons are covered in the paper lining which makes it difficult to recycle them.
Ware had the brilliant idea of collecting old crayons and melting them down into a new paper-free form. He decided to mold them in a three-sided shape to increase their grip and prevent them from rolling off hospital tables. the crayons are also large enough that they don’t finish quickly. His idea has grown into a network of people for sending crayons to hospitals all over the US.
It’s an amazing initiative for several reasons. The obvious one is that it’s good for the kids as well as hospitals in creating a fun place during stressful times. They are also benefiting the environment by recycling crayons and promoting environmental protection actions.
It is also a way to bring people together as a community. They bring together volunteers who gain life skills such as hosting events, interacting with people, and raising awareness.
The crayon initiative is being backed by companies like Visa, Vodafone, Cisco, and HBO as well as many other people and corporations. They have in this initiative sent crayons to 657,800 patients in 240 hospitals across the US, keeping 50 million crayons from being sent to landfills.
Hospitals and families are extremely grateful to receive these crayons. It’s a thoughtful donation that allows patients to express themselves and fill their lives with colors.
You can help them by starting fundraisers or crayon collection events in your community. You can donate to their cause here.
