TASKEEN-A Karachi-based non-profit operates for the promotion of mental well-being and prevention of mental illness in Pakistan. Their primary goal is to change the negative perceptions about mental health in the country through awareness, education, expression, and advocacy.
Their programs involve a telephonic helpline that provides counseling to patients and their caregivers. The counselors are a well-trained bunch in calming people in distress. During the consultation, they also conduct a mental health screening to ascertain if the beneficiaries require specialized mental health services. If the beneficiaries do require such services, then they are connected to the partner mental health service providers.
Taskeen aims to spread as much awareness as possible through its social media platforms, mass media, apps, etc. it will encourage people to seek help for themselves and their loved ones. So far, they have launched 3 awareness campaigns from 2019 to 2020. At present Taskeen is launching a campaign in collaboration with the National Commission for Human Rights to raise awareness of the importance of regulation of mental health services.
In December 2019 they launched a ‘Corporate Wellness Program’ to encourage companies to put importance on the mental health of an employee for a good business environment. Workshops were conducted for training all employees regarding self-care, healthy relationship building, and stress management.
The main focus of Taskeen's advocacy efforts is to persuade the government to adequately address mental health in the national healthcare policy and allocate substantial funds for it. This is done by establishing the importance of mental health on par with physical health among the key stakeholders in the nation.
Taskeen has built alliances at the local, regional, and international levels in order to do this, and in addition to serving as Pakistan's representative in the Global Speak Your Mind Initiative, also serves as the secretariat for the South Asian Union for Mental Health and the Pakistan Mental Health Coalition.
On their website, they have a large collection of mental health literacy videos that educate mental illness bearers, and their caregivers about myths and misconceptions regarding mental illnesses as well as teach methods for healthy parenting. You can also view stories of hope from individuals who have overcome their mental health issues.
In addition, they also have learning resources ranging from general facts about mental health and different types of mental issues to ways we can manage our stress and more.
They are quite active on social media, give them a follow on Instagram or join their Facebook group where you can get consultations or just educate yourselves. Their telephone helpline is tel:+923168275336.
