CHARITY RESPONDS TO THE WORST DROUGHT IN EAST AFRICA FOR 40 YEARS

Cool Story - CHARITY RESPONDS TO THE WORST DROUGHT IN EAST AFRICA FOR 40 YEARS

Ethiopia is facing its worst drought in 40 years due to a lack of rainfall for four years going on the fifth. This is the cause of a major hunger crisis affecting east African areas spanning Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. Children and adults are suffering from deadly malnutrition for thousands of numbers. Over one million people need food aid with almost 1.85 million children suffering from hunger.

Due to insufficient rainfalls, the livestock is dead, crops are destroyed, and hunger has caused people to leave their homes while the conflict in the north as in Ukraine keeps contributing to increasing food and fuel prices. This leaves more than 20 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Ethiopia.

In face of such difficult times, ShelterBox and the international disaster relief charity it's the pairing to help people facing the drought in East Africa. They provide emergency shelter and tools to people displaced by disasters and conflicts in many countries.

The situation in the Horn of Africa has been largely overlooked which is why Cornwall-based ShelterBox will be distributing emergency shelter aid to the locations of affected people and the drought regions this month. This will be including any items that help people by building temporary shelters to protect themselves from the weather.

Henry Thompson who is the ShelterBox program manager in Ethiopia says that the tarpaulin provided to the people will create shelters that would help families protect themselves while finding food and pasture for their animals.

The regional director for east and southern Africa Sam Hewitt adds that due to the war in Ukraine, Africa has been ignored during this crisis where 4.51 million people have been forced to evacuate from their homes leaving behind their livelihoods which is why they are looking for places to set up a shelter for the people in Ethiopia and Somalia.

This charity has been working in Ethiopia since 2018 when millions of people had been forced to flee their homes due to conflict rising hunger and economic instability. They have supported forward 60,000 people since that time with items like tarpaulins, ropes, blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, water carriers, and kitchen sets. They've been working with their partner The International Organization for Migration IOM on a project that will further support 60,000 people.

Shelterbox is also providing countries like Bangladesh which has flood-mediated destruction, as well as war-torn countries like Ukraine, Mozambique, Yemen Syria, Ethiopia, Lake Chad Basin, and Niger. And not just here but they’ve reached out to 90 countries whenever there is a disaster and humanitarian aid is required.

ShelterBox has helped more than 60,000 Africans since it was established in 2000 and relies heavily on public donations to fund its responses. For more information about ShelterBox visit shelterbox.org.
