For those with no place to go or in need of emergency shelter, local Salvation Army homeless shelters provide a warm, safe place for men, women, and – whenever possible – families to stay. They’ve been a haven for people especially Christians since 1865.
Two organizations in San Diego, CA including the Salvation Army have been collaborating to provide food and employment for those in need. The Salvation Army hires residents from its homeless shelter and trains them to be food rescue route drivers. They then operate routes for feeding San Diego to pick up tasty food before it is wasted. They rescue perfectly viable food that could have been wasted and ended up in a landfill instead it will now feed the hungry and the homeless.
The food is picked up several times from grocery marts like Costco and Vons, Starbucks, and Amazon warehouses, among other businesses. The food is then distributed to people in need such as those back at the Salvation Army shelters.
One such driver is Daniel Rocha who before getting employed by the shelter was homeless for nine months. Now he has a job picking up food from grocery stores three times a week.
This program was possible because of funding from the Lucky Duck foundation whose donations are helping feed the homeless being trained into drivers. The partnership between Salvation Army and Lucky Duck foundation reached its peak in June when they announced that more than half a million pounds of food has been saved, along with which every single one of the residents of the Salvation Army who had participated in the program ending up getting full-time employment why still being housed.
