Child Find of America is an organization dedicated to resolving child abduction and its causes. They provide free solutions and resources to aid in solving these issues. These services can be accessed both nationally and internationally. Child Find’s 1-800-I-AM-LOST number gives people access to staff who are seeking lost, kidnapped, or runaway children. There are also training programs available for parents. Child Find aids thousands of children each year, either returning them home or helping them find a more secure one. It’s because of the services provided by Child Find that children can grow up in safe and happy environments.
In 1974, mother Gloria Yerkovich experienced the abduction of her 5-year-old daughter at the hands of the child’s father. At this moment in time, there weren’t any means of finding missing children. There was also little understanding of how parental abduction or how it affected a child’s psychology. Gloria founded Child Find of America in 1980, as a way to aid parents in situations like hers.
After 10 years, Gloria and her daughter were reunited in Europe. By this time, Child Find had become an incredibly influential organization. Gloria and other child advocates had gradually increased the public’s knowledge about the issues of missing and abducted children. Their efforts led to the passing of the 1982 Omnibus Victims Protection Act and the 1984 Missing Children’s Assistance Act. Child Find served as a model for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which was founded in 1984. Child Find also helped National Missing Children’s Day on May 25th to become official.
One service that Child Find offers are their In Safe Hands toolkits. In these toolkits, early educators will find important tools and facts about topics such as child abduction and runaways, so they can help parents dealing with these issues. Materials included in the toolkits include education about Parental Conflict, Having Difficult Conversations with Parents, Resources and Research Lists, and much more! The American Legion’s Child Welfare Foundation awarded Child Find a grant in 2016, to allow them to print and administer their toolkits to Head Start programs in all 50 states. The project was a great success, with many Head Start offices asking for additional toolkits.
One of Child Find’s most important programs is its Parent Help program. In this program, parents are given aid over the phone to help in times of crisis. Parent Help connects parents with the knowledge they will need in any given situation. The case managers at Parent Help can provide assistance for issues like co-parenting challenges, parental abduction prevention, and domestic violence. Together with a case manager, parents and their child(ren) can come up with solutions to the problems they have. Michelle is one of many parents who have been assisted by Child Find in getting her children back. After losing her job and car in California, Michelle had to move to Arizona for a new job. She enlisted her parents to care for her three children, David, Darnell, and Trisha while making the move. After a month had passed, Michelle’s parents refused to relish her sons, returning only her daughter. She soon discovered her parents had run away with the boys. When the police and district attorney were unable to do anything, Michelle contacted Child Find of America. Child Find worked with Michelle for two months on her case. They helped her with legal matters, distributed posters with her sons on them, and introduced her to Team HOPE, a support group who helped with the emotional challenges she was facing. Child Find didn’t rest until Michelle had her boys back. To read the whole story, click here: https://childfindofamerica.org/a-family-abduction/.
