Keep America Beautiful is an organization founded with the goal of cleaning and maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces. They do this through educating the public, research, their cleanliness programs, and implementing important changes. There are over 700 affiliates, 1,000 partners, and millions of volunteers who work together to help Keep America Beautiful with its mission. Keep America Beautiful has been cleaning up the world for over 65 years, and they’re still going strong. While Keep America Beautiful has educated people about issues such as littering, it’s still a problem. Keep America Beautiful won’t rest until everyone knows about these issues and does their part to help.
Keep America Beautiful was founded in December 1953, as a response to the litter created from the construction of the Interstate Highway System. The organization was a combined effort of American companies, non-profits, and government agencies. The aim of Keep America Beautiful was to teach Americans about the problem of litter(usually through public service announcement campaigns), and what they could do to combat the problem.
Keep America Beautiful has had a long history since its founding. In 1956, Keep America Beautiful released their very first PSA about litter avoidance. In 1960, they started what would be a 50 partnership with the Ad Council. Keep America Beautiful began their “Crying Indian” PSA campaign, which would become one of the most well-known and successful PSA campaigns of all time. The PSA featured a Native American man saddened by Earth’s desolation resulting from littering. In 1976, the Clean Community System program was started. This would later become the Keep America Beautiful System. Keep America Beautiful added to their waste education mission by adding the topic of solid waste education in 1988. In 2020, Keep America Beautiful launched DoBeautifulThings.org., a website to show acts of kindness taking place. As you’ve probably inferred from this article so far, Keep America Beautiful is an organization that cares deeply about litter prevention. Cleaning up litter is expensive, and it can end up in our oceans if we don’t act quickly enough. That’s why Keep America Beautiful wants the public to take the initiative to stop litter in its tracks. Important research is done to teach the public about litter statistics and the main sources of litter. Keep America Beautiful also has documents about actions people can take, such as this one: https://kab.org/april-is-keep-america-beautiful-month-10-ways-to-take-action-2/. Keep America Beautiful is also working to make recycling easier for Americans. The easier it is, the more people will do it, and it will make a bigger impact. The three principles of recycling that Keep America Beautiful emphasizes are convenience, communication, and cause. Teaching Americans why and how they should recycle and giving them better recycling options will encourage more people to do so. Beauty is the name of the game for this organization. Keep America Beautiful has many hard-working volunteers who beautify communities that need it. The Great American Cleanup and Community Impact Grants have allowed for important changes like tree planting and lot transformation to happen. Over 15,000 communities have been beautified each year.
