The Humane Society Legislative Fund Protects Animals by Passing Important Laws

Cool Story - The Humane Society Legislative Fund Protects Animals by Passing Important Laws

The Humane Society Legislative Fund (or the HSLF) was started in 2004 as a combined effort of The Humane Society of the United States and The Fund for Animals. The HSLF’s main job is to pass laws that help to protect animals. They also work to teach people about animal rights topics and ensure potential candidates for office treat animals right. As of 2006, the HSLF has partnered with the Doris Day Animal League as well. Since its inception, the HSLF has expanded its legal work and has made the public more aware of animal welfare issues. It’s not enough just to fight against these issues, animals need to have federal and state protection. While animals can’t talk, the HSLF’s work gives them a voice to speak up against abuse and mistreatment.

There are many different plights animals go through that the HSLF is working to put an end to. One of those issues are puppy mills. Puppy mills are a pet store’s main source for puppies, but they hide some dark secrets. There are about 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S., with most of their proprietors appearing on the Horrible Hundred report multiple times. Doges used to breed puppies in puppy mills live in tiny cages, receive no medical care, and are killed as soon as they’re not able to have dogs any more. The puppies themselves are weaned too early, have little to no human contact, and contract horrible diseases. The HSLF believes dogs deserve defense from such cruel treatment. They’re working to end the reign of puppy mills through their work to end this vicious cycle once and for all.

Another animal abuse problem plaguing dogs are dog fights. Dog fights are when two canines viciously attack each other, sometimes to the death. These fights are held for people to make money and bet on its outcome. Dog fights have been around a lot longer than one might think, but over time, they became illegal. Despite being illegal, that hasn’t stopped people from running dog fights; statistics from The Humane Society show that 40,000 people participate in dog fighting in the United States. Most dog fights are at least one to two hours, giving the dogs ample time to seriously hurt each other. The HSLF wants to put an end to these awful events. They’re working to put a stop to those who organize and attend dog fights, as well as stop young children from witnessing them.

Right now, as you’re reading this, millions of animals are being used in testing and research. Multiple internal tests are being conducted on chimpanzees. Small animals like rabbits are used to test makeup and other products. Pigs and goats are being used by the military for injury testing. Dogs and cats are being sold to laboratories for research. The HSLF is working together with Congress to urge researchers to use testing methods that don’t require the use of animals. They also want to end cruel animal testing practices. While the HSLF has made great progress, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

The HSLF is a non-profit organization, so they’re only able to do their work because of their generous donors. About 82 percent of the donations they receive is used for their work.
