Americares Saves Lives and Improves People’s Health

Cool Story - Americares Saves Lives and Improves People’s Health

On April 4th, 1975, an American plane crashed into a jungle near Tan Son Nhut. The passengers on the plane consisted of 243 orphaned Vietnamese children. While many of the children (unfortunately) did not survive, the rest were seriously wounded. The Pentagon, the United States Department of Defense's headquarters, stated it would take 10 days to reach the children. However, for a paper broker named Robert C. Macauley, 10 days was too long to wait. After learning what had happened, Macauley reserved a Boeing 747 and came to the children’s rescue. The children were saved within 48 hours and were safely brought to California. Spurred by the success of his undertaking, Macauley wanted to figure out a way to help more people in need. In 1979, Macauley established the organization known as Americares.

The purpose of Americares is to administer medication, medical equipment, and philanthropic help to those who need it. Americares has partnered with many different people to provide people with a healthier lifestyle. One of those people was Pope John Paul II! In 1981, Macauley was summoned by the Pope for an urgent matter. Stratocracy in Poland was causing a lack of proper medical supplies and medication. The Pope asked Macauley to amass money to buy these important supplies for his people. With the help of two friends, Macauley raised $1.5 million to buy the medical supplies and medication Poland needed. Macauley has also worked with important kings, heads of state, and even Mother Teresa.

Even though Macauley died in 2010, his legacy still lives on. Americares created a new logo for the company on September 12, 2016 as part of its new identity. At the time, the organization was broadening its plans to provide more of its sources globally. Specifically, Americares was looking to aid more people in areas that are affected by poverty. While the company has a new logo, their goal remains the same: to do everything they can to rescue lives and make people healthier.

If you’re going to support a charity or non-profit, you want to make sure it’s one you can trust. Americares is one of the most trustworthy and reliable non-profits of its type out there. Charity Navigator is an organization that assesses charities and what they do. Americares has been given a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator five years in a row! This is because of Americares’ dedication to its finances and responsibility. For a list of Americares’ financial honors, click here: https://www.americares.org/about-us/credentials/. The support given to Americares has enabled them to do their most important work. Every time a disaster or calamity has occurred, Americares was able to implement recovery plans. Americares has heeded the call to over 30 incidents each year. Americares also helps over 4,000 health care centers around the world to provide the necessary supplies for them. There are four health care clinics run by Americares in Fairfield County, Connecticut. These clinics help over 2,500 people get access to affordable health care.

All of the amazing work that Americares does is thanks to the support of its donors.
