RedRover is an animal rights and well-being organization based in Sacramento, California. Their operation works to rescue animals by bringing them to shelters. RedRover also works to make the bonds between people and animals stronger. They use programs and techniques such as impromptu sheltering efforts and emergency-relief assistance to achieve their goals. RedRover has lots of volunteers and cohorts that they work together with to make all of their efforts possible. To give an idea of what they've done over the years, this organization has 4,693 volunteers working for them, 2,540 animals that were sheltered in 2021, and 245 implementations.

One of RedRover’s programs is the RedRover Relief Safe Escape grant program. This program works to assist pets and their families who are fleeing from domestic abuse. The program also helps to supply the necessary finances for a pet’s lodging during a customer’s stay in a domestic abuse shelter. It’s important to note that this aid will only be given while the client is in the shelter. Grants will be given based on several circumstances, such as how fast a grant needs to be given. Someone who works in the shelter where the client is situated must submit an application for a grant. Another program offered by RedRover is the Purple Leash Project. While data shows that one in three women and one in four men will be subject to domestic abuse in their lives, just 15% of domestic violence shelters will allow pets. That’s why RedRover has teamed up with Purina to combat this problem by creating the Purple Leash Project. This program works to create more animal-friendly shelters by awarding grants and encouraging existing shelters to implement spaces for pets. The Purple Leash Project also works to spread their knowledge about this issue and teaches shelters things they can do to help. RedRover hopes that by the year 2025, 25 percent of domestic violence shelters in America will be more pet-friendly.

If you have any pet-loving kids in your family, then you’d be interested to learn about the RedRover Readers program. This program was started in 2007 and allows children through the ages of 5-11 to learn more about empathy. First, the child takes the RedRover Readers either in-person or virtually. Next, a teacher will read a book about animals to a group of children, while asking questions before and after. The students will then participate in pastimes that will strengthen their understanding of animals. Not just any books are read to children in this program. The books chosen for this program show the relationship between animals and people, and will help children to develop empathy for animals by understanding what they go through. 737 classrooms have implemented RedRover Readers, and 121,738 children have been taught by this program.
