Friends of Animals has been a champion for animal rights since 1957. They advocate for all animals, whether they are wild or domestic. The main objective of this organization is to save animals from brutality and being taken advantage of. Friends of Animals was started by a woman named Alice Herrington. Herrington established the organization to provide a safeguard for cats and dogs. A healthcare space for animals was set up to serve this purpose. This space mainly dealt with providing spay/neuter surgeries for a low price. From that point on, Friends of Animals has expanded to provide over 2.8 million spay/neuter surgeries.
While most of us love cats and dogs, the fact is that there are way too many out there. As a result, many animals are either homeless and/or are forced to be euthanized. In fact, 1.5 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year. Spay/neuter procedures are the best method for controlling America’s pet population. Spaying is done to a female animal and consists of removing the animal's ovaries or uterus and ovaries. Neutering is done to a male animal and is when the animal’s testicles are taken out. An anesthetic is given to the animal so it won’t be in pain during the surgery. Stopping animals from having unnecessary offspring will allow more animals in shelters to be adopted. A spay or neuter is also an affordable way to control the amount of pets in America, especially if you get it done at Friends of Animals. They will provide a cost-effective certificate for either a spay or neuter. Over 2.8 million cats and dogs have been given these surgeries because of these certificates.
Friends of Animals also participates in several animal rights campaigns. One of these campaigns is the American Wild Horse Campaign. Horses are on the brink of vanishing, and Friends of Animals wants to do something about it. Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas have already seen their wild horses vanish. What’s more, the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 has caused horses in the wild to lose 41 percent of their homes. One step the organization has taken is winning 13 court cases to keep horses safe. Herds of horses and their families will stay together and not be taken from their homes. The aforementioned cases divulged that the Bureau of Land Management was pinching pennies and disobeying the National Environmental Policy Act. In 2020, the BLM wanted $116.8 million from Congress for the Wild Horse and Burro Program. This would result in many horses being taken off of the land and killed. Luckily, Friends of Animals isn’t going to turn a blind eye to this. They will do whatever it takes to help save the horses, and you can, too.
