A cleft condition is defined as an opening in a person’s mouth. This usually occurs in the beginning of pregnancy. Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft condition. That's about one in every 500 to 750 births! Cleft conditions can either be in a person’s lips or the roof of their mouth/the palate. Cleft conditions can cause problems if it’s left untreated. Such difficulties include trouble feeding and ear infections. It’s unclear what exactly causes cleft conditions, but factors such as genetics and contact with dangerous materials can inhibit a baby’s development, and cause such a condition.
While dealing with a cleft condition may seem scary, there’s no need to be afraid with Operation Smile in your corner. This organization provides life-changing surgery for children born with a cleft condition. These services can be provided for as little as $240. Operation Smile has many people who play a part in helping these children. Doctors and surgeons offer their time to perform these surgeries, and there are companies that contribute the required instruments to ensure these surgeries are performed safely. The price for a cleft surgery at Operation Smile includes all of the necessary medical procedures, dental work, a speech language pathologist, and anything else the family of a child born with a cleft surgery will need.
Cleft conditions are usually best dealt with as soon as possible. Surgery for a cleft lip should be performed before a baby turns 3 months old, and a cleft palate ought to be taken care of between the ages of 12 and 18 months. However, for those who live in a low- or middle-income area, it’s not possible to take action through surgery so early on. Around the globe, people in these countries lack the finances and access to surgeons to perform cleft surgeries early on in a child’s life. Operation Smile finds families who need their help, and quickly supplies them with the necessary surgery and care. This organization works with children and families living in counties where the resources for cleft surgeries don’t exist. All countries and communities are different, which is why Operation Smile partners with regional doctors, hospitals, and other organizations to figure out the best course of action based on where they are.
Operation Smile works tirelessly to give each child they work with the best care possible. They were the first non-profit of its kind to back up the World Health Organization's Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative. The organization’s Medical Global Standards, are their dedication to giving all of the children under their care the same doctors, surgeries, and medical tools. Operation Smile has also partnered with the University of Southern California and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to investigate why cleft conditions happen in the first place. By doing research in the form of the International Family Study (IFS), Operation Smile hopes to gain a greater comprehension of what causes cleft conditions, so no one is born with them anymore.
If you care about children being healthy and living their best life, you should provide support for Operation Smile.
