The Issues of Understaffing in Nursing Homes

Cool Story - The Issues of Understaffing in Nursing Homes

By Beth Plutner

If you have an elderly loved one in your family, they might live in a nursing home. You probably think that your loved one and the other seniors are being taken care of. However, this may not be the case. If your loved one lives in a nursing home that is understaffed, their care will suffer greatly. This article will discuss the issues of an understaffed nursing home, and how a virtual care aide from Wejob.org can help.

Why a nursing home might be understaffed

Nursing homes may be understaffed for a number of reasons. This may be done intentionally as a way to increase the nursing home’s profits. By keeping the staff low, the home can cut the costs of labor. Understaffing may also be a result of an inability to keep employees. If there is a lot of stress in the facility, there will be a turnover in the staff. The nursing home may simply not have certified nursing staff available. Whatever the reason, understaffing has dire consequences for seniors.

  • Tip: Check to see if there has been an increase in the ratio of patients to staff members. This is a telltale sign that there is an understaffing problem.

Problems understaffing can cause

The well-being of the seniors in a nursing home will suffer because of understaffing. The needs of seniors may be ignored on purpose, or there may just be too many people to take care of. A lack of staff can result in seniors not getting basic needs like food and water. Seniors can develop bedsores from being ignored while they’re in bed. An employee may target a specific senior(or seniors) and not give them any care.

  • Fact: 40% of seniors living in nursing homes have reported abuse, and over 90% were neglected.

  • Fact: A study in 2010 reported that half of all nursing home employees had neglected or abused seniors.

Senior abuse

One of the most heart-breaking issues of nursing home understaffing is abuse. Workers may verbally assault seniors and terrorize them. Seniors can also experience physical harm at the hands of these workers. Harm might occur if a senior is intentionally given the wrong medication by a worker. Seniors may be too scared to speak up about these incidents. A lack of quality staff will allow these horrific acts to go unnoticed.

  • Tip: If you notice warning signs in seniors such as new injuries, it’s a sign abuse has occurred.

  • Tip: Encourage seniors to speak up about abuse. They should not be afraid to tell the truth.

How Wejob.org can help

If you run a nursing home and are experiencing any understaffing issues, we want to help. We’re Wejob.org, a non-profit website that cares about helping seniors and their families. We can provide you with virtual care aides to help you take care of your seniors. Our aides will watch over and protect seniors when you’re unable to. Our services are also a fraction of the cost of similar services.

  • Fact: Our services range in price from $1-$3 per hour.

How it works

An Amazon Echo Show 8 2nd Gen tablet is provided to help watch over the seniors. You can place the tablet on a senior’s wheelchair or walker. This allows the virtual care aide to watch over the senior. The tablet allows the aide to perform simple tasks like turning on the lights in a senior’s room. The aide can talk with the senior, or comfort them during the night. Wejob.org’s virtual care aides allow seniors to feel much safer and like they are never alone.

  • Tip: If a senior is using the tablet for the first time, show them what to do. That way, they can use it on their own.
