To assist Maui people who lost everything in the recent fires, thousands of clothing items were sent there. The surplus of clothing now needs to be recycled.
As contributions poured in, garbage bags full of clothing started to fill local businesses. One environmentally concerned store in Napili Marketplace, which served as a collection point for donations following the fires, saw that these bags were being thrown in dumpsters.
Owner of Hoolawa Maui Megan Dalbac stated, "I can't even quantify the amount of clothes we received here. We had to use two open spaces in the plaza just for sorting and looking through the goods since it was filling up our business, the walkways, and the alleyways.
Some of the clothes that were delivered had stains, holes, or were otherwise useless, thus the items were discarded. To ensure that every apparel could be recycled, Dalbac and her friends from Keep It Simple on Oahu joined together with Rosalie Snyder and the business For Days.
Many people think that when we donate our clothes, they go to someone in need, yet 85 percent of textiles end up in landfills, according to Snyder.
Hunter Long, a co-owner of Keep it Simple, said: "People have this instinctive want to help and conserve their things, so it won't go to waste. "And they just need the right channel to do that, and that's what we're trying to do with our event on September 16," the organizer continued, "because a lot of people had the good intention to donate but they might have missed the window to do so. Now they can use their clothing at the event or donate their items that wouldn't be reusable like worn or tattered items and it can be recycled properly."
World Cleanup Day is on September 16, and people are encouraged to visit Keep it Simple Kapolei to exchange old clothing. The event's leftover clothing will be sent to For Days, where the items will be recycled or put to other uses.
