$1M donation to empower lives with evidence-based psychology knowledge

Cool Story - $1M donation to empower lives with evidence-based psychology knowledge

With his most recent million-dollar commitment to Arizona State University, Robert Cialdini is guaranteeing that an even larger audience has access to psychology information to improve their lives. Robert Cialdini links individuals to the fundamental discoveries of human social behavior.

At ASU, Cialdini is a former Regents Professor of Psychology and Marketing. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and is regarded throughout the world as the foremost expert in the study of social influence. His contributions to The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Department of Psychology go back more than 50 years, and they include ground-breaking research, generosity, inspirational teaching, and mentoring. With his recent gift to the department's Psych for Children program, Cialdini has increased his long-standing engagement alongside Bobette Gorden, his wife and business partner.

"Bob and Bobette's generous donation is yet another manifestation of their quest to give psychology away — empowering people, charitable organizations, communities, and businesses to improve their overall well-being, in ways that stand true to our scientific understanding and responsible ethics," said Steven Neuberg, Foundation Professor and Psych for Life founder.

The core purpose of Psych for Living is to use the best science to give people and organizations access to evidence-based information to improve daily living in ways that are reliable, interesting, practical, and empowering. With the help of the project, psychological research is digitalized and made available as on-demand, bite-sized lessons, giving people the chance to learn crucial skills for improving different facets of their lives.

Through the use of cutting-edge psychological science, Psych for Life addresses common problems and possibilities in relationships, parenting, well-being, career, and other areas. These include facilitating difficult talks, creating new habits, and managing stress.

"I've always felt a responsibility to impart to interested students research-based psychological information. Psych for Life is the best program I'm aware of that accomplishes this, according to Cialdini.

According to Neuberg, the Psych for Life program started as a dedication to psychology students' lifelong success and well-being but has since expanded into a larger mission to support learners on a large scale.

"The Department of Psychology started a long-term commitment in 2017 to help our students get ready for the various job paths they might choose after graduation.

According to Neuberg, the former chair of the ASU Department of Psychology, "We wanted to help them achieve meaningful and productive lives, so we started creating an integrated set of programs for improving undergraduate success and career preparation."

These programs included an expanded internship program, increased access to scholarships for students who are typically underrepresented in STEM, a psychology-specific tutoring center where students participate in a peer coaching model, and a mentorship network where alumni share their experiences of what they are currently doing with their psychology degrees. The gift from Cialdini and Gorden to Psych for Life will enable the extension of these initiatives to reach a wider spectrum of people while also supporting the other purposes of the organization, helping it advance to better serve its alumni and the community.

The goal of our work at ASU is to improve lives, including the economic, social, and cultural well-being of local communities and the global community. According to Tamera Schneider, professor and chair of psychology, "The Psych for Life initiative is proof that the Department of Psychology is at the forefront of creating solutions to important social, cultural, and well-being concerns.

Cialdini, a New York Times No. 1 bestselling author, is the co-founder of the Cialdini Institute and the author of "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion," "Pre-suasion: a Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade," and "Influence at Work."

Gorden stated that "Psych for Life offers exactly what we as individuals and as a society need—easy access to scientifically sound, helpful content."
