A nearby church youth group acted quickly to make sure seniors had food both before and after Tropical Storm Hilary, and cleanup efforts are still ongoing.
The food gifts from California Zion Church totaled almost $5,000 and were given to an Anaheim senior living facility. The drop-off was supposed to happen at a later time, but due to the storm, church organizers opted to do it right now.
According to Sara Luca with California Zion Church, New Heaven New Earth, "the demand has increased because a lot of them haven't been able to leave their homes and be able to go out and get the food that they need. So we knew this was going to be of help to them."
Residents claim that the extra food is quite helpful.
We were able to stock up on an earthquake preparedness kit, and after the recent hurricane, we had our dry foods and other essentials, so it helped us out. To be completely honest with you, it makes me want to cry," Weldon Carpenter remarked.
"Oh yeah, they help me get to the next check, to the next check, and it's a nice thing to donate," remarked Ronnie Shepherd.
The money was gathered by more than 100 kids at the church, and now they may enjoy the results of their labor.
Volunteer Kathy Tu stated, "It was touching to see." "I think food really opens up the hearts of so many people, and ultimately, at the end of the day, we're just doing our duty as good neighbors."
