Vaccinating against HPV has health benefits

Cool Story - Vaccinating against HPV has health benefits

The discussion regarding the HPV vaccine is being brought to Here @ Home as part of National Immunization Awareness Month.

The Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. It is a typical virus that can later in life lead to specific tumors.

In Virginia, children must receive the HPV vaccine, and the first dosage must be administered before they enter the seventh grade.

The second dose should be administered six to twelve months apart, according to the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health.

Increasing immunization coverage throughout the state is the goal of the statewide coalition Immunize VA, which works to create a healthier Virginia.

Families with concerns about this series of vaccinations for their children should be aware that it helps prevent eight different types of malignancies, according to Immunize VA's Rebecca Epstein.

"It's very incredible that they are now beginning to employ the same technology that is in the HPV vaccination to produce vaccines to prevent other types of cancer, such as breast cancer and brain tumors. Therefore, seize the chance if you can shield your child against cancer in any way. It's only a preventative step for public health, according to Epstein.

Children over 15 who have never received a vaccination are still able to receive it. Just three doses of the vaccination will be required.
