Day of Action to help local nonprofits

Cool Story - Day of Action to help local nonprofits

We all have compassion within us. Each of us possesses a conscience; it is that audible "little voice" that implores us to assist others who are in need.

Every day, local nonprofit organizations carry it out. They don't ask for anything in return. Their only goal is to have improved someone else's situation.

But have we ever considered the possibility that perhaps the charities themselves require support? What if they were the ones in need of assistance? Can we assist them?

Would we pause and ask these available services in the community, "What can I do for you?"

On August 31, that chance will present itself.

When the United Way of Jefferson County launches its 2024 campaign and hosts its annual Day of Action, people will have the option to help charity organizations.

This will be the occasion when Jefferson County residents can unite and "Live United."

A free breakfast will be served after registration at 8 a.m. inside the Jefferson County Workshop Event Centre, which is situated at 256 John Scott Highway.

Executive director of United Way of Jefferson County Laura Rauch stated that "Day of Action makes an immeasurable impact in our community."

"Day of Action addresses a range of community issues.”

Today is the day that we ask you to volunteer with a local nonprofit to help us carry out our purpose.

There will be a variety of projects available for volunteers to pick from, depending on their interests, level of physical labor required, and availability.

In addition to helping in local parks, painting buildings on the inside or outside, filling out paperwork, and landscaping are just a few of the alternatives available, according to Rauch.

Rauch stated, "We are always seeking for volunteers for Day of Action. We are seeking nonprofit organizations that would like to submit their projects for completion.”

"We are dedicating this year's Day of Action in memory of Sheriff Fred Abdalla," Rauch said.

Rauch continued, "This is also a good way for civic groups, businesses, and community volunteers to come together to support non-profits who may need extra helping hands to complete tasks they may not have the manpower to complete on their own."

Our activities and campaigns "would not be possible without our volunteers and an extraordinary board of directors," she said.

"Our volunteers who go out into the community do make an impact in the lives of area residents," said Rauch.

She continued by saying that many people require the services offered by these nonprofit organizations. She stated, "We want to thank our volunteers who come out every year to donate their time to help those NGOs and to serve their communities.”

Presently, 25% of Jefferson County's population is considered to be in poverty. A further 25% of its citizens are classified as "working poor."

This indicates that in the Ohio Valley, 50% of the local population struggles daily to make ends meet.

And neighborhood groups, like the United Way, work tirelessly to provide these people with the aid they require.

Anyone desiring to donate to the United Way of Jefferson County may do so either online or by sending a cheque to 511 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, OH 43952 (P.O. Box 12463). You can donate online by going to the www.unitedway-jc.org website.

To learn more about any of these programs or to find out how you can volunteer for the upcoming Day of Action, call the United Way at (740) 284-9000.
