World Bank grants $213 million flood donation to Balochistan

Cool Story - World Bank grants $213 million flood donation to Balochistan

A $213 million loan for Balochistan was granted by the World Bank's Board of Executive Directors to assist the people affected by the floods of 2022 with risk mitigation, basic services, and livelihoods.

The money, according to a release, is a part of the strategy developed with the government to confront the horrific floods that hit the country this summer and build a climate-resilient Pakistan.

According to Najy Benhassine, the World Bank's Country Director for Pakistan, "We will be working closely with the Government of Balochistan to support the affected communities by providing livelihood support and restoring irrigation and flood protection infrastructures."

In Pakistan, a nation of 220 million people, unprecedented monsoon rains in the south and southwest combined with glacier melt in the north resulted in flooding that might have affected 33 million people last year. The deluge, which also devastated homes, crops, bridges, roadways, and cattle, claimed the lives of almost 1,700 people.

The Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project (IFRAP), according to a statement from the World Bank, would provide 35,100 households with financial aid for home reconstruction.

Repairing damaged public utilities and infrastructure, such as the water supply, irrigation, roads, and communal buildings, will also help to resume essential services.

According to Yoro Sidibe, a senior water specialist at the World Bank, "Balochistan is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters due to its geographical location, socioeconomic background, and climate change."

WB claims that the project will benefit a few localities in Balochistan's calamity-declared zones, where a little over 2.7 million people live. IFRAP will enhance institutional capability while repairing deteriorated watersheds at the provincial and local levels.
