When Milford High School Principal Joshua Otlin sent out an email to the entire student body, Elsie Sutherland learned about MIT's Leadership Training Institute. She became interested in it and enlisted.
She muses, "When people think of a leader, they don't think of introverts; they think of extroverts," before arguing that introverts have an advantage. They observe what is occurring around them and enquire, "How can I improve this situation?"
The website she developed as her capstone project for the leadership degree streamlines community service for Milford residents. Community Connection has been operational for more than a year at this point. It links those looking to volunteer with those in need of assistance.
It's simple on her website. She said, "I can locate all that material and compile it into a brief article for people to read and skim through.”
Each entry provides information on the nonprofit, the event, the type of service project, and a sign-up form. Elsie is familiar with the sense of fulfillment that comes with volunteering because she has done it for a very long time (she began working with animals when she was 12). She remarked, "You may reach out and invest the time and energy to make a difference.”
Non-profit organizations can use the website as a platform to inform visitors about their goals. There is also a financial gain.
Elsie claims she is happy to assist charities in promoting their good work. She has gained knowledge of the variety of community issues and the organizations devoted to addressing them through her research on the website. She uses Habitat for Humanity as an up-to-date illustration. "I was startled to learn that they build and maintain houses," she remarked.
She became a volunteer after researching the organization Children Across America. She frequently leads children in games, crafts, or storytelling at the United Methodist Church in Milford on Saturdays.
Elsie could be the last person to brag about her contributions notwithstanding those contributions. Nonetheless, school officials, such as Milford High Associate Principal Bill Chaplin, are pleased to commend her. He smiles and states, "The school is quite proud."
"There are 720 days in a high school year. It goes quickly. Every student is constantly encouraged to discover something to pursue; during your four years here, you should do so. For her, she is discovering that. Other pupils should follow this example well."
Elsie hopes that she will someday be able to get other students to assist with the site when she departs for college the following year. She is content for the time being to accept complete accountability for her creation. She claims she is discussing expanding the site's reach with guidance counselors in Hopedale and Hopkinton.
Elsie is also anticipating a forthcoming volunteer opportunity that she is passionate about. The "Against The Tide" benefit for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is scheduled on June 17.
She took pictures of attendees at the event last year and used one of those pictures to promote it on the website and social media. She continued, "It's not just the emotional pain that I experience; it's just sheer delight to see other people happy.
Elsie revealed that her mother passed away in 2013 due to colon cancer. Cancer is undoubtedly a personal issue, she adds, trailing off. She cites her father as her greatest inspiration, and she claims that as a result of her work with MBCC, he now assists the organization in locating sponsors.
Her input of time, talent, and effort is substantial. She takes pride in the fact that she managed to develop and keep up a website despite having a demanding academic schedule and demanding lectures.
