Edith, 80, and Tony, 89, give out daffodils to strangers

Cool Story - Edith, 80, and Tony, 89, give out daffodils to strangers

Although it is not observed on everyone's calendar, Random Acts of Kindness Day served as inspiration for a "selfless" pair of nursing home patients.

On February 17, Edith Smith, 80, and Tony Hugman, 89, both Berkeley House Bupa Care Home residents, set out on a quest to make people's days better around the Bilton Grange. The contagious cheerful couple was seen wheeling around town in their wheelchairs and giving out daffodils to the fortunate.

Before going to the post office and the neighborhood doctor's office, Diadem Medical Practice, Edith and Tony made their first visit to the deli Scrumptious Sandwich Bar on Greenwich Ave to deliver their first bunch of daffodils to the staff.

The pair would leave flowers along their path as a cheerful pick-me-up for onlookers on benches and pedestrian crossings; they came up with the concept themselves.

Tony said: "I had a terrific day passing out the flowers. I enjoy seeing people smile. One woman even said that it had brightened her day, which also made mine.”

The two were accompanied by Berkeley House's activities coordinator Rachelle Wood, who declared: "At Berkeley House, kindness always comes first and means everything.”

"Edith and Tony have always been incredibly generous and kind to everyone at the care home, so when they suggested we go out into the community to try to make people smile, I was ecstatic – they're both very kind-natured and generous people.”

Sarah Ward, the manager of Berkeley House, is already organizing additional days out so that residents can share their contagious grins. "It was fantastic for our residents to go into the community to spread some joy!" she added.
