As an effort to continue to make Cochrane a better place to live and help support local non-profit organizations, the Cochrane Foundation sponsored its 30th annual award ceremony on March 16.
The event was held at Seniors on the Bow within the SLS Centre at 5:30 p.m. 18 non-profit groups supported a range of projects at the festival.
Tim Harvie, the board chair for the Cochrane Foundation, stated that the organization was created in 1993. It is supported by a $1.7 million endowment fund, which brings in about $90,000 annually for the foundation.
"We give that cash to several Local nonprofit organizations," Harvie said. We have an awarding cycle once a year where different groups submit applications to the Cochrane Foundation for funding their projects.
We examine each one, evaluate it against our granting standards, and then award it.
At the ceremony on Thursday, the chosen organizations received their checks and had the chance to introduce themselves and explain how they would utilize the funding.
They have the opportunity to network with other local nonprofits during the event as well.
By doing so, we raise awareness of the Cochrane Foundation as well as the work being done by the other Cochrane organizations, according to Harvie. Because Cochrane has such a diverse range of needs and organizations that perform good work, it is incredibly encouraging.
The foundation also has a sub-fund called the McQuitty Fund, which is devoted to medical causes or students seeking post-graduate studies in the medical area, in addition to the grants they give out to non-profits.
This year, three exceptional individuals who work in the medical field, the pharmacy industry, or who are enrolled in graduate school each received a grant, according to Harvie.
Through its two projects, the Cochrane Foundation contributed $87,000 this year. The Cochrane Foundation has given $1.1 million to more than 100 different Cochrane organizations since it made its initial grants in 1997.
The list we have is incredible, Harvie said. "Many are repeat grantees, returning each year, like the Ag Society and the recreation center, but some are one-time recipients."
The annual ceremonies, according to Harvie, offer more than just an opportunity to support various Cochrane organizations. Additionally, they assist in educating the public about the Cochrane Foundation itself.
For nearly 30 years, Cochrane residents have kept it a secret, according to Harvie. I believe that many people are still ignorant of its existence.
Harvie explained that because the Cochrane Foundation is an endowment fund, the more gifts made to it, the more of an impact it may have on the local nonprofits. He requests that locals in the Cochrane area think about donating to the Cochrane Foundation.
According to Harvie, if the money is placed in an endowment, it will continue to create cash for the town that we all adore.
As the foundation's chair, Harvie said he enjoys taking part in events like the one on March 16 and that everyone has a good time.
Every year is like Christmas, said Harvie. The 10-member board that makes these decisions and distributes funds to the community is made up entirely of volunteers.
