Newton ice cream shop rewards an 11-year-old boy for helping elderly residents

Cool Story - Newton ice cream shop rewards an 11-year-old boy for helping elderly residents

A Newton sixth grader has received recognition for his motivational good actions.

Newton Police urged the public to "make a senior your sweetheart" during the week leading up to Valentine's Day earlier this month. The purpose was to begin showing kindness to older neighbors.

Nate Sorrell, age 11, went above and beyond. His 90-year-old acquaintance is terrified to go shopping at Trader Joe's since they don't offer delivery. He began doing her grocery shopping as a result, and that rapidly became more.

He told WBZ-TV, "I brought Trader Joe's to the elderly and those with COVID. The community took notice of that.”

Owner of Cabot's Ice Cream in Newton, Joe Prestejohn, packaged a special order for Sorrell and his family on Sunday.

He told WBZ that it was amazing to see that quality in a little child today and that he deserved to be recognized for it.

Sorrell received the complimentary ice cream from a police cruiser, as well as a visit from Leo the police dog. A letter from Prestejohn was also present.

Sorrel read aloud from the card, "Thank you for setting such a wonderful example to so many others in our community.”

What goes around, comes around, according to Prestejohn. "Do it if you can help someone and you see something that needs to be done."
