Cowley pupils walk through the snow to support Help the Aged

Cool Story - Cowley pupils walk through the snow to support Help the Aged

Everyone would typically have been anticipating spring-like weather at the beginning of March, but not this year.

In 1974, everyone experienced a harsh winter, including these young people who braved the snow to embark on a sponsored charity walk.

Even though the snow was a surprise for the young fundraisers, The Oxford Mail stated that "they stepped out in Wellington boots with irrepressible enthusiasm."

One competitor from St. Edmund Campion School in Cowley dressed in three pairs of pants, three pairs of socks, and an umbrella to be warm.

From the base of Headington Hill in Oxford, the walk circumnavigated South Park in support of Help the Elderly.

At the scheduled start time of 9.30 am, only six individuals showed up, disappointing the organizers. However, over 100 keen walkers appeared within the following hour.

About £400 was raised to support the elderly, which pleased Rowena Jewers, the organization's youth coordinator.

"The kids were eager to go and enjoyed the trek," she said.

She had assistance from Richard Marks, John Cox, Tom Kemp, Heather Ross, and Mary Nock, five Oxford Polytechnic students, in planning the trek.

Miss Jewels were hoping to plan a second walk in East Oxford a month from now and were hoping for truly spring-like weather.

Age UK, which merged the operations of the formerly distinct organizations Age Concern England and Helps the Elderly, was established on April 1, 2009.
