Volunteers Clean and Restock Rivers in Cambodia

Cool Story - Volunteers Clean and Restock Rivers in Cambodia

The focus of Good Deeds Day celebrations typically centers on environmental stewardship. More than 2,000 volunteers came together on December 25, 2022, just before the new year, to help celebrate and protect the nation's rivers, taking projects in Cambodia to a new level.

Why is Good Deeds Day so significant? What is it? Businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison created Good Deeds Day, the culmination of year-round charitable endeavors, in 2007. In 109 nations throughout the world, millions of people participate in this historic day.

Taking care of one's surroundings and other people

The festivities in December began with traditional music and entertaining characters, but the focus was on the value of giving to others and caring for the environment by sanitizing and refilling the nation's rivers.

According to GDD Cambodia, the main project was the result of a collaboration between the city of Phnom Penh, the ministries of the environment, education, and tourism, the red cross, youth organizations, as well as thousands of volunteers, both young and old, who came together to promote protecting Cambodia's rivers.

Around 2,000 kg of plastic trash were retrieved from the Mekong River and its riverbank during a big cleanup. 200 thousand fish fry was discharged into the river as part of the day's activities.

According to the Khmer Times, this was part of a wider plot to release 16 million fish between December and April 16, which is both the GDD date in 2023 and a national holiday in Cambodia.

According to Nou Sovann, the executive director of River Ocean CLEANUP (ROC), the river was refilled with fish to assist maintain food security. The goal of Good Deeds Day, according to Sovann, is to raise awareness about the significance of helping to increase the fish population in Cambodia by releasing fish into ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Additional activities that day included spreading the word about upcycling to cut waste, planting trees, and giving out food packages to those in need.

Good Deeds Day 2023

According to GDD Cambodia, the 2022 events were so well received, particularly by young people, that the primary activities will once again be those that have a long-term impact through fish releases and river cleanups. In reality, the ministry of education, which serves 4.8 million pupils nationwide, is one of the partners this year.

There will be more than 2,000 volunteers in Phnom Penh City and another 1,500 outside. Across the nation, a range of events is being planned so that anyone who wishes to have a positive impact on their community has an option.

You can take part in Good Deeds Day as well. Simply look over some of the many great suggestions on the GDD website and choose one that speaks to you.
