Mediterranean Deli hosts fundraiser for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria

Cool Story - Mediterranean Deli hosts fundraiser for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria

As the death toll reached 40,000, Mediterranean Deli, Bakery, and Catering organized a fundraiser on Wednesday for those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Almost $30,000 was raised at the benefit, and all of it was given to the victims and their families.

Owner of Med Deli Jamil Kadoura claimed to have been seven years old and living in a refugee camp during the Arab-Israeli Conflict. The "compassion and decent organizations" that assisted him and his family during difficult times served as his inspiration for planning the fundraiser.

It's time to give back, Kadoura remarked, because when he was young and hungry, he was given a lot.

With former causes including hurricane victims in Haiti and flood victims in Pakistan in the summer of 2010, Med Deli has hosted benefit events for crisis assistance. According to Kadoura, another ticketed event that benefited Syrian refugees generated $26,000 in two hours.

Yet according to Kadoura, the Chapel Hill community's support—which he claimed always comes through when it counts—is what makes these events possible.

He remarked, "I've been here 33 years, and I can't think of anyone to whom I owe more gratitude than this community.”

The restaurant's capacity had been exceeded during previous fundraising events, so the staff chose to provide a constrained menu this time.

The menu featured dishes including Moroccan chicken, jerk chicken, lamb and beef gyros, a four-item sampler, Greek salad, and a few restricted sides, according to Liz Coughlin, catering director for Med Deli. The entire event was arranged last week.

It happened quickly, according to Coughlin.

The week before the event, Coughlin said, preparations were "non-stop," including brainstorming a limited menu, getting everyone on board, reprogramming the registers, publishing brochures, and updating social media.

In addition to the income made throughout the day, Kadoura added that the restaurant asked Facebook for donations.

Both Kadoura and Coughlin said that the lunch rush was particularly active and that they anticipated a large number of clients for supper.

Coughlin claimed that even though she usually only works in the back, the increased traffic forced her to assist regular register workers by working the front registers.

Coughlin stated, "I didn't know this was going to happen, but so many people are making just so many donations on top of their meals, it's just crazy."

Kadoura said he could trust Islamic Relief USA, which will receive the revenues from Wednesday. Islamic Relief USA offers critical supplies, including food, water, and medicine, as well as immediate relief for families.

Kadoura contacted the imam of the Islamic Association of Raleigh, which collaborates with Islamic Relief USA, Muamar Dahnoun. The Islamic Association of Raleigh facilitates donations to refugees from numerous organizations.

Dahnoun stated, "I believe we are only a small portion of the many, many others who have responded to this catastrophe with a humanitarian reason.”

He claimed that so far, local assistance has given the Islamic Organization about $65,000.

Patrick Jeffs, a resident of Chapel Hill and a frequent patron of Med Deli, stated that the occasion was crucial for inspiring people to help communities affected by crises all over the world, particularly in a town that actively embraces global variety.
