7-Year-Old Boy With Autism Is Terrified of Riding the School Bus – Drivers Have an Unexpected Response

Cool Story - 7-Year-Old Boy With Autism Is Terrified of Riding the School Bus – Drivers Have an Unexpected Response

Even on the best days, raising a child with developmental challenges is difficult. It can seem like an impossibly steep hill to climb on the worst of days.

Parenting may be lonely and frightening, even when kids are developing normally and hitting all of their developmental milestones.

It is crucial to accept assistance from people who are willing to provide a hand and lessen your load. Two kind bus drivers who made it their goal to assist made life considerably simpler for one young family.

Why a 7-Year-Old Was Terrified of Riding the Bus?

Seven-year-old Miles Ferrara is an autistic boy with weak linguistic skills. He can be just as joyful and animated as any other elementary-aged child, yet some commonplace chores seem much greater and more terrifying to him than they might to someone else.

Miles experience anxiety while doing many of his routine duties, including taking the school bus. His parents became persuaded that their cherished son would never be able to travel the bus alone since the thought of him doing so terrified them.

They expressed their worries to the bus drivers in the area and the school administration, who then intervened on their own.

Robert Wray and Ginta Spencer, the bus drivers, devised a strategy after learning about Miles' limitations and anxieties. Shannon, Miles' mother, was given a call, and they discussed their plans with her. Shannon's anxiety was greatly reduced by the discussion.

She was able to adjust her son to the frightening surroundings for the first time with the assurance that others were watching out for her youngster.

During our 20-minute phone conversation the previous evening, Mr. Wray "truly gave me the assurance that he was going to take care of my kids, mainly Miles," Shannon recalled.

How Two Bus Drivers Illustrated the Value of Watching Out for Others

To prevent Miles from finding the bus rides boring or difficult, Robert and Ginta came up with games and fantastic music for him to listen to. Miles received a lifesaver candy every day for safely making it to school and back on the bus; he even got to pick the color! Red is his favorite color.

"When he gets off, he approaches me and requests a lifesaver. What color do you want?" I ask. "Red," he responds.

When neighbors learned what Robert and Ginta had done for young Miles, they decided to put them forward for NBC 12's Random Act of Kindness award.

The two were given a large bag of lifesavers, Miles' favorite candy, as well as a monetary prize of $150 each for winning the award. Always keep in mind that even the smallest deeds of kindness can make a significant difference.

Before receiving assistance from Robert and Ginta, the Ferrara family struggled greatly with the stress of getting Miles to school. Their quality of life has greatly increased and they can breathe easier now.
