The company on North Street in the city contacted the Salvation Army of Canandaigua for assistance after learning that almost two dozen Pactiv Evergreen employees from Guatemala had arrived there with nothing.
The employees of Pactiv Evergreen were so moved by the willingness to assist that they realized they had to repay the favor. As a result, a partnership was established, which is anticipated to last a very long time.
Their collaboration paid off enormously during the company's first Give Back Month of Action in September of last year (and they continued their good actions into October).
Through several drives and occasionally entertaining internal challenges to encourage participation, more than 500 employees gathered 15,000 pounds of food items for the Salvation Army.
The Canandaigua factory and Canandaigua Technology Center received a payment of $2,500 to deliver to the Salvation Army from the company's food merchandising section. The Canandaigua Regional Mixing Center received a check from the logistics business unit to donate to Canandaigua Churches in Action.
The manager of Pactiv's Canandaigua plant, Terry Lafferty, emphasized the value of giving back to the neighborhood where the company conducts business.
According to Lafferty, this program allowed us to demonstrate how crucial the community is to our ongoing success.
How does Pactiv's contribution to food assist?
Salvation Army Maj. Pamela Rhodes said that the food the company collected was distributed to thousands of households in Canandaigua and the surrounding area.
People who were starving were fed, Rhodes added. "That level of generosity is the only way," the speaker said.
Maj. David Rhodes reports that a significant amount of pet food was also provided after it became clear during the food collection that this was a need in the neighborhood that wasn't being met.
According to Pamela Rhodes, "people will feed their animals before they eat themselves." That was difficult to hear.
According to Lafferty, Canandaigua's efforts reflect those made by the entire firm in terms of volunteering, particularly when it comes to feeding the hungry. The company as a whole donated 3,348 hours of volunteer work, collected 93,673 pounds of non-perishable food items and funded 91 charity organizations.
What is ahead for Pactiv and the Canandaigua Salvation Army?
As both parties are thinking of new methods to assist, it seems the partnership will continue. As part of the Angel Tree program last holiday season, corporate employees also bought toys in addition to collecting food.
Through this collaboration, Pactiv staff members not only became aware of the homelessness issue in Ontario County but also took action by helping to put together kits for the homeless that contained food and toiletries.
David Rhodes noted that the Salvation Army is grateful for Pactiv's support.
He added that they went above and beyond and gave neighborhoods who are having a hard time getting by much-needed food.
