'Heaven Cent' raises $18,000 for local charities

Cool Story - 'Heaven Cent' raises $18,000 for local charities

At the Second Line East high school on Thursday morning, St. Mary's College students and faculty officially celebrated the success of their Christmas 2022 "Heaven Cent" campaign.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board's computer systems were the subject of a ransomware attack on December 15, which sent children home two days early than planned for the Celebration of Giving ceremony.

In the three weeks leading up to Christmas, SMC students and teachers donated $18,277 to 15 neighborhood charities and not-for-profits to support those in need in the neighborhood.

The recipients of the funds raised are:

  • St. Vincent Place
  • Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre
  • Pauline's Place
  • Breton House
  • Sault Ste. Marie YMCA
  • Harvest Algoma
  • Algoma Pregnancy Centre
  • Metis Nation of Ontario
  • Algoma Autism Foundation
  • Breaking Away
  • Helping Hands - Caring Hearts
  • Santa Claus Fund - Christmas Cheer
  • Habitat For Humanity Sault Ste. Marie
  • Women in Crisis
  • ARCH - Illuminate the Season

Fundraising events for the 2022 Heaven Cent campaign included:

  • Student versus teacher soccer, basketball, volleyball, and hockey games
  • Mr. SMC Bachelor Pageant with over 450 attendees
  • Pasta Dinner Kit Fundraiser
  • Joyful Socks
  • SMC Talent Event
  • Seven dress theme days
  • Canned food drive
  • Name that Tune fundraiser

SMC chaplain Stephanie Parniak advised the students in attendance at the ceremony today that, just as Jesus Christ was born into humble circumstances and carried out good deeds for a great number of people during His time, they too should be humble and help those in need.

On the stage of the auditorium, representatives from the majority of the groups that would benefit from 2022 Heaven Cent were there and accepted checks.

Additionally, there were prayers, a quick film presentation, and a dance performance by several SMC students throughout the event.

Heaven Cent emphasizes the value of giving to those in need, and seeing all the recipients receive the funds they were able to receive motivates Grade 12 SMC to do more in the future.

Christopher Czop, vice-principal of SMC, said, "We were able to accomplish fundraising since there were no COVID stoppages and restrictions.”

"Everything was made available. That was excellent. It was fortunate. Our Grade 12 kids knew what Heaven Cent was, but our younger students didn't understand the full impact of Heaven Cent since we had all the COVID constraints, so it was almost like a rebranding.”

We were ecstatic to be able to accomplish this, Czop stated.
