Flamingos aren't known for being business-savvy, but the Pe Ell School WE Club used their flamboyance to raise nearly $1,000 to purchase Christmas presents for neighborhood children.
WE Club members secretly placed a flock of flamingos in an unknowing Pe Ell resident's yard as part of the fundraiser "You've Been Flocked," asking the "victim" to donate $5 per bird or whatever amount they felt comfortable with to have the flamboyance—the technical term for a group of flamingos—removed and placed in another yard of their choosing.
The flock only stayed in one person's yard for 24 hours, regardless of the donation.
This year, the "You've Been Flocked" fundraiser and a Dance-a-Thon at the school both attracted sufficient participation from Pe Ell locals to enable the WE Club to purchase Christmas presents for six neighborhood children.
Eight members of the group made the purchases on Friday, December 16, and spent Monday wrapping the presents for delivery on Tuesday.
The WE Organization is a high school "good deeds" club that raises money for a variety of purposes, such as reopening an elementary school year that was wrecked by Hurricane Harvey and purchasing goats for families in Africa.
The club has raised more than $7,000 in the last six years to help local Pe Ell families by purchasing Christmas presents.
The club was able to give more money to each child this year than in years past, even though this year's campaign helped fewer children than it did last year.
Returning club members concurred that handing out the gifts to the children was their preferred aspect of this particular event.
Payton Peterson, a senior at Pe Ell and a member of the WE Club, stated, "It's quite nice to witness all the parents' emotions."
