The Sarasota Campus of Everglades University recently gave over 232 pounds of candy, valued at $1,864, to Treats for Troops, an initiative spearheaded by Soldiers' Angels, a nonprofit organization that gives aid, comfort, and resources to the troops, veterans, and their families.
Treats for Troops is a Halloween candy collection program in which local businesses take extra candy to donate to deployed service members and veterans.
From October 4 to November 4, EU Sarasota acted as a candy collection station.
In addition to the candy contributed by individuals, second-graders at Rayma C. Page Elementary School in Fort Myers, Florida, collected 130 pounds of candy on their own. They also included a handwritten/drawn message thanking our warriors personally for their service.
Westinghouse SURE (Service Uniting Retired Employees) donated $1,500 to Sarasota-based All Faiths Food Bank as part of its Annual Feed the Hungry Program.
The donation will benefit those suffering from food insecurity as a result of Hurricane Ian's devastation.
Westinghouse SURE, headquartered in Western Pennsylvania, is one of the nation's largest and most effective all-retiree volunteer organizations, with almost 800 members worldwide.
SURE's hallmark Feed the Hungry initiative has increased its community support year after year, contributing a total of $38,400 to people in need in 2022.
This year, Michele Tanner and a team of volunteers gave Thanksgiving dinners and gift cards to 600 deserving families in Sarasota and Manatee counties. She served 500 families with her food last year.
Tanner is the Tanner Group team leader at Preferred Shore Real Estate.
Tanner's Turkeys, a basket brigade event that provides a traditional Thanksgiving meal, including a frozen turkey and all the fixings for a feast, has been helping those less fortunate in her town for 12 years.
Tanner has already fed 3,300 families in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Meal delivery was made this year to 25 households in Fort Myers Beach devastated by Hurricane Ian.
