The American nonprofit organization Random Acts, which does acts of goodwill all around the world, wanted to help The Brick's Wrap Up Wigan initiative.
Twenty slow cookers, twenty heated blankets, twenty blankets, twenty adult coats, and twenty hot water bottles totaling more than £4,000 in total were contributed.
With the spike in energy prices this winter, The Brick, a local nonprofit that assists residents in the borough who are homeless and poor, has been collecting the products through its Wrap Up Wigan campaign.
Nearly 20% of Wigan households experienced fuel poverty in 2021, and more than 20% of the city's additional winter mortality was related to cold homes. It's feared that these numbers will increase this winter.
"I'm born and raised in Wigan and I know the extent of poverty and homelessness impacting the people in our town," said Alex Vincent, who joined Random Acts in 2018 as a regional representative in the UK and is now the community outreach director.
"I am thrilled to be able to get involved and help their Wrap Up Wigan campaign because The Brick gives consistent support and help that truly does have a positive influence on people's lives. "
Our goal is to spread compassion around the world, one random deed at a time, and we believe that any effort is worthwhile.
We are very appreciative of Alex and everyone at Random Acts for this incredibly kind and generous donation, said Wendy Doherty, head of fundraising and partnerships at The Brick. It's great that a large organization like this can assist us, and a lot more families will benefit.
"To be able to share this generosity with our community at this time of year when so many individuals are expected to experience tremendous hardship is just amazing."
The Brick is gathering thermal gear, hand warmers, electric blankets, sleeping bags, blankets, hot water bottles, padded coats, body warmers, fleeces, hats, gloves, socks, and slow cookers. Any of its stores will accept donations.
To request a slow cooker or electric blanket, call The Brick on 01942 236953 or email enquiries@thebrick.org.uk.
