Massachusetts nonprofit helps veterans and horses heal together

Cool Story - Massachusetts nonprofit helps veterans and horses heal together

Project Comeback, a charity with its headquarters in Holliston, aims to heal both humans and horses. Since 2017, the group has worked mostly with veterans to rehab rescue horses, a procedure that aids in both parties' emotional healing.

"The healing that takes place here is wonderful, "According to founder and executive director Lindsay Andon, BPR. "All the folks who come out here find healing in the horses simply being horses, being close to them, connecting with them, and helping them, and vice versa.

Her involvement in other groups served as an inspiration for Andon. She was able to decide that this was the path she wanted to take because of these experiences.

The horses used by Project ComeBack range from thoroughbreds to ex-racehorses to even wild mustangs. Andon claims that these horses have a variety of ailments that they are trying to treat.

Many of our thoroughbreds struggle to socialize and reintegrate into herd dynamics and habits, the trainer claimed. "A lot of them grew up in a pretty solitary way, so when they were little foals, they didn't have that socialization,"

Mustangs, on the other hand, have the reverse issue: They get along well with other horses but sometimes struggle with people.

Andon claimed that some programs just address the concerns of veterans while ignoring those of the animals, thus she believed it was crucial to design a program that benefited everyone.

Veteran Dave Shanahan, who took part in Project ComeBack, stated that he finds it crucial to assist the horses in their recovery and adaptation. Once they form bonds, he's seen horses truly "come out of their shell."

When participating in some of these programs, veterans frequently feel like "We're kind of the victim" or "We're the ones that are damaged." Your confidence just grows as a result of coming in, working with the horses, and truly becoming that partner, according to Shanahan.

Shanahan claimed he had little prior expertise with horses and was initially dubious of the procedure. However, this program comes naturally to Scott Cousland because of his experience.

Since I was a boy, animals have always played a significant role in supporting me, according to Cousland. I've always loved animals.
